Wanneer een scheepshaven sluit, verliest de vader van Liam en Teresa zijn werk. Liam is 8 jaar en krijgt al veel kerkgeweld in zijn richting. Teresa heeft werk als een bediende bij een Joodse familie, die de gesloten scheepshaven bezit. De dame van dat huis heeft een affaire. Liam stottert enorm en zijn vader komt ook erg in de problemen.
