De Duitse soldaat Bernd Trautmann wordt tegen het einde van de Tweede Wereldoorlog gevangen genomen in Engeland. Tijdens een voetbalwedstrijd tussen de gevangenen wordt de keeper opgemerkt door Jack Friar, manager van een amateurclub. Trautmann, die gedwongen mee moet spelen bij het team, verrast hem zowel op als naast het veld.
