De in Engeland geboren Joan Stanley is een Sovjet en sympathisant van de communistische partij. Ze wordt ingelijfd als ambtenaar en wordt in de jaren 30 gerekruteerd door de KGB. Ze slaagt erin geheimen omtrent de kernbommen door te spelen aan de Sovjet-Unie en weet ruim een halve eeuw haar identiteit als spion verborgen te houden.
