Los Angeles, de jaren '30 van de vorige eeuw. De jonge tekenaar Tod Hackett weet werk te vinden bij een grote Hollywood studio. Hij is nog vol hoop en dromen. Hij ontmoet de beginnende, maar niet bijster getalenteerde actrice Faye Greener, op wie hij vrijwel onmiddellijk verliefd wordt.
