Mauricio Rosencof en de voormalige Uruguayaanse minister van Defensie Eleuterio Fernández Huidobro worden jarenlang opgesloten tijdens de militaire dictatuur in hun land, wanneer ze opkomen voor de stedelijke guerrillabeweging Tupamaros. Hun gevangenschap duurt bijna twaalf jaar, van 1973 en 1985. Ze worden overgebracht van barak naar kazerne, geïsoleerd en gemarteld. Toch worden ze in leven gehouden als gijzelaars van het militaire regime. In 1985, na de komst van de democratie in Uruguay, wordt de Tupamaros een legale politieke beweging.
