Violet Evergarden is een gepensioneerde soldaat die altijd als wapen is behandeld. Wanneer ze gedwongen wordt te integreren in het burgerleven nadat ze haar armen in de strijd heeft verloren, gaat ze aan het werk als een Auto Memory Doll - iemand die anderen helpt brieven te schrijven. Ze probeert te leren hoe ze menselijke gevoelens kan begrijpen, met in het bijzonder een zin die haar vermoedelijk dode majoor, Gilbert Bougainvillea, tegen haar zei: "Ik hou van je." Violet worstelt met het idee dat hij dood is en is vastbesloten te achterhalen wat het voor haar betekent om te leven en dit met hem te delen.
