Ted was op de middelbare school een grote nerd, die het toch voor elkaar kreeg om met Mary, een populair meisje, naar het eindbal te gaan. De date is nooit doorgegaan aangezien Ted een pijnlijk ongelukje kreeg. Dertien jaar later realiseert Ted zich dat hij nog steeds verliefd is op Mary, en huurt hij een privé-detective in om haar op te zoeken.
