Peg Dahl is een zwendelaar die er alles voor over heeft om te ontsnappen uit haar geboortestad Buffalo, New York. Nadat ze in moeilijkheden terecht is gekomen, raakt ze bedolven onder de schulden en lijkt ze haar kansen op een betere toekomst te hebben verspild. Vervolgens besluit ze als deurwaarder zelf schulden op te eisen en een oorlog te voeren met de plaatselijke misdaadbaas.
