De dienstplicht wenkt voor folk-zanger Arlo Guthrie. In afwachting of hij al dan niet opgeroepen wordt wil hij nog enkele maanden naar school gaan om een "geschikte" Amerikaan te worden. Hij ziet er zijn vriend Roger terug, maar deze wordt al na enkele dagen weggestuurd. Arlo komt even later ook in botsing met de autoriteiten en hij besluit Roger op te zoeken. Deze heeft zijn intrek genomen in een oude kerk samen met Alice en Ray. Zij willen van de kerk een restaurant maken.
Nee, helaas is Alice's Restaurant nog niet beschikbaar op Netflix in Nederland.
