Het verhaal speelt zich af tegen de achtergrond van de Miss Worldverkiezing in Londen in het jaar 1970. Rond diezelfde tijd is er de vrouwelijke vrijheidsbeweging die de wedstrijd als kleinerend voor de vrouwelijke sekse beschouwt. De groep weet tijdens de live uitzending het podium te bestormen. Wanneer de show daarna zijn einde nadert, wordt het duidelijk dat niet de Zweedse lieveling, maar Miss Grenada, de eerste niet-blanke vrouw, tot Miss World verkozen wordt.
