Norman Dale (Gene Hackman) is een basketbal coach die door zijn verleden gedwongen wordt om het slechtste middelbare school team van de provincie te coachen voor de Indiana State championship. Alhoewel iedereen hem liever ziet gaan dan komen zet Dale moedig door met een niet aflatende passie voor het spel. Langzamerhand wint hij het respect en vertouwen van het team, maar de strijd is dan nog maar voor de helft gestreden. In een wereld waar dorpsteams zich ontpoppen tot aartsrivalen, kan een outsider de trots van een hele provincie opwekken.
