Matilde, Cencio, Fulvio en Mario werken in het circus en zijn als familie, wanneer de Tweede Wereldoorlog in Rome uitbreekt. De circuseigenaar Israel zoekt naar een manier om samen het land te verlaten, maar verdwijnt hierdoor van het toneel. De vier vrienden blijven verweesd achter. Zonder werkplek verliezen ze hun plaats in de maatschappij. Als rariteiten zwerven ze rond in een door oorlog verscheurde stad.
