Het Apollo Theater op 125th Street in het New Yorkse Harlem is meer dan een podium: het is een thuis en kraamkamer voor een eindeloze reeks Afro-Amerikaanse grootheden als James ‘Mister Apollo’ Brown, Ella Fitzgerald, Ray Charles, Prince en Richard Pryor. Een safe haven waar Billie Holiday het aandurfde om ‘Strange Fruit’ te zingen en een plek waar de Afro-Amerikaanse cultuur wordt gevierd. In deze documentaire komen bezoekers van het theater aan het woord.
