Max en Leo zijn 8 en 5 jaar oud en zijn net met hun moeder van Mexico naar de VS geëmigreerd. Hun dagen gaan voorbij in een piepklein appartement, terwijl ze wachten tot hun moeder terugkomt van onbeduidende baantjes, blijven ze de hoop koesteren om naar Disneyland te gaan. Max zal vroeger volwassen moeten worden om de motivaties van zijn moeder te begrijpen. Ze mogen het appartement niet verlaten, waardoor de muren een soort projectiescherm worden voor de ingebeelde avonturen die ze beleven.
