Harry Caul is een afluisterexpert, die zijn geld verdient met het afluisteren van andere mensen. Wanneer hij een flard van een gesprek opvangt, meent hij iets op het spoor te zijn. Hoe meer stukjes hij bij elkaar sprokkelt en hoe vaker hij zijn tapes beluistert, des te meer hij ervan overtuigd raakt dat er zich spoedig een drama zal afspelen.
