Toen Bruce Chatwin stervende was aan aids, bracht zijn vriend Werner Herzog een laatste bezoek. Als afscheidscadeau gaf Chatwin hem zijn rugzak. Dertig jaar later begint Herzog aan zijn eigen reis, geïnspireerd door Chatwins passie voor het nomadische leven, waarbij hij verhalen ontdekt over verloren stammen, zwervers en dromers.
