Een Oost-Europeaan, Viktor Navorsky, bezoekt New York. Wanneer hij op Kennedy Airport is aangekomen breekt er in zijn thuisland oorlog uit. Hij kan niet terugvliegen en mag met zijn huidige papieren de VS niet in. Viktor improviseert en maakt van Kennedy Airport maandenlang een tijdelijk thuis, waar hij de mensen bekijkt en verliefd wordt op stewardess Amelia.
