In de jaren vijftig is de zestienjarige Joanna ingetrokken bij haar hooghartige tante Martha in een huurkazerne in New York City. Maar een biologische dreiging vanuit de Sovjet-Unie dwingt het gebouw en de huurders in isolatie. Nu het voedsel opraakt en tante Martha's omstreden rol als leider zich uitbreidt, realiseert Joanna zich dat ze zowel haar 'duistere' gevoel als haar tante onder ogen moet zien om de huurders te redden. Maar kan ze de leiding op zich nemen zonder dat deze 'duisternis' haar volledig overneemt?
