Scott is een stand-up comedian uit Los Angeles, die maar niet weet door te breken en met de staart tussen de benen terug verhuist naar Long Island. Marty is een tragisch gebrekkige, doch charmante en charismatische dermatoloog met een drankprobleem. De twee voelen zich met elkaar verbonden en er ontstaat een vriendschap, waarbij ze elkaar helpen omgaan met mislukking en zoeken naar genezing.
