Het verhaal speelt zich af in de nabije toekomst, waar tijdreizen tot de mogelijkheden behoort maar zeer illegaal is, en gaat over Joe (Joseph Gordon-Levitt), een scherpe, slimme huurmoordenaar. Maar Joe is geen gewone huurmoordenaar. De slachtoffers die hij maakt worden gebonden en met een kap over hun hoofd dertig jaar terug in de tijd gestuurd: hij jaagt hen een kogel door het hoofd, verbrandt de lichamen en alle sporen van z’n misdaad verdwijnen. Het leven van Joe is mooi, tot op de dag een lichaam aankomt zonder kap: het is zijn toekomstige zelf (Bruce Willis). En deze laatste is niet van plan om zonder gevecht neer te gaan…
