Gebaseerd op het leven van de Deense schrijfster Karen Blixen, die een plantage opricht in Kenia. Haar gecompliceerde leven wordt beheerst door haar overspelige echtgenoot, haar ware liefde Denys, problemen op de plantage en het onderwijzen van de lokale bevolking.
