Trainspotting vertelt het verhaal van de werkloze Mark Renton (Ewan McGregor) die samen met zijn zogenaamde vrienden het alledaagse leven in Edinburgh kleur probeert te geven. Hun leven bestaat voornamelijk uit bier drinken, uitgaan, drugs en voetballen.
