Frank is in 1973 een beroemde professor aan de universiteit van New York. Zijn dorpje in South Carolina heeft hij reeds lang achter zich gelaten en contact met zijn familie heeft hij evenmin. Zijn nichtje Beth is daarentegen aanwezig in zijn leven, maar verzwijgt dit voor haar familie. Wanneer het familielid Mac komt te overlijden, moet Frank noodgedwongen naar huis terugkeren.
