Het bestaan van Sydney Carpenter stort in als zowel haar man als haar zoon om het leven komen bij een bootongeluk. Als ze later thuiskomt, ontdekt ze tot haar schrik dat er bij haar ingebroken is, en alles overhoop is gehaald. Detective Jim Sanders concludeert al snel dat het het werk van professionals moet zijn geweest, maar er lijkt niets gestolen. Als Sydney vervolgens ontdekt dat haar man vlak voor het ongeluk een grote som geld had opgenomen - geld dat nu onvindbaar is, waardoor zij vrijwel blut achterblijft - neemt de zaak steeds vreemdere vormen aan. Ze besluit opnieuw contact op te nemen met Sanders, om uit te zoeken wat de toedracht van het ongeluk was.
