Ben Jordan komt na vijftien jaar vrij. Hij belandde in de gevangenis omdat hij zijn vrouw neerstak met een mes. Na al die jaren houdt hij echter nog steeds zijn onschuld vol. Laura Mathews, de sociaal assistente die hem voortaan moet begeleiden, gelooft hem blindelings. Naarmate ze hem beter leert kennen en gesprekken voert met mensen uit Bens omgeving, wordt ze steeds verliefder op hem. Dit ondanks de waarschuwingen van haar vrienden, die ervan overtuigd zijn dat ze zich met een koelbloedige moordenaar inlaat.
