De tienjarige Earwig woont in een weeshuis in Engeland en is zich niet bewust van het feit dat haar moeder over magische krachten beschikte. Op een dag wordt Earwig door de heks Bella Yaga geadopteerd en gedwongen om met deze egoïstische vrouw samen te leven. Het meisje poogt haar nieuwe thuis te ontvluchten.
