Na zijn vlucht uit de Verenigde Staten werd aangenomen dat Butch Cassidy in Bolivia in 1908 is overleden. De waarheid is dat hij zich 20 jaar heeft schuilgehouden onder de naam James Blackthorn. Hij vindt het nu tijd terug te keren naar de Verenigde Staten om zijn zoon, die hij al die tijd niet heeft gezien, te ontmoeten. Voordat zijn reis begint, ontmoet hij een Spaanse ingenieur en ze besluiten samen op te trekken, op weg naar hun laatste avontuur.
