Jack Torrance is een schrijver met een writer's block. Wanneer hij wordt aangenomen voor een baan als huismeester van het prestigieuze Overlook Hotel, dat zich op een afgelegen plek in de bergen van Colorado bevindt, ziet hij dit als de ideale kans om inspiratie op te doen en zijn boek af te maken.
