De succesvolle uitgever Will Atenton (Daniel Craig) stopt met zijn baan in New York om, samen met zijn vrouw Libby (Rachel Weisz) en twee dochters, te verhuizen naar een schilderachtig dorpje in New England. Maar dan komen ze erachter dat in hun perfecte huis een moeder en haar kinderen zijn vermoord. Het hele dorp is van mening dat haar man, de enige overlevende, de dader is. Wanneer Will deze tragedie onderzoekt, komt zijn enige aanwijzing van Ann Paterson (Naomi Watts). Zij is een buurvrouw die goed bevriend was met de familie. Will en Ann proberen samen het verontrustende mysterie op te lossen.
