Op verzoek van tsarina Elizabeth wordt de vijftienjarige prinses Sophia onder de naam Catharina uitgehuwelijkt aan Peter, de Russische troonopvolger. Met hem heeft Catharina echter niets gemeen en ze wordt verliefd op de jonge edelman Saltykov. Nadat zij een troonopvolger gebaard heeft, wordt het kind haar meteen afgenomen en wordt haar minnaar naar het buitenland gestuurd, waarna Catharina zich erg eenzaam voelt. Als Elizabeth sterft ontstaat een harde strijd om de macht.
