Het zit Dave Purcell bepaald niet mee. Zijn huwelijk, zo ontdekt hij, is op een dood punt beland en zijn restaurant, de Auk, is een faillissement nabij. Als zijn vrouw ervandoor gaat en de schuldeisers op z'n deur kloppen, zoekt de wanhopige Dave zijn toevlucht in z'n wijnkelder om z'n verdriet te verdrinken met goede wijn, voordat de bank er beslag op kan leggen. Maar er is nog hoop. Dave's excentrieke buurman Alphonse bedenkt een dubieus plan om z'n maatje te helpen.
