Joseph woont met zijn vrouw Anne en dochter Renée in de wildernis waar ze hun kost verdienen als pelsjagers. Ze kunnen de eindjes maar moeilijk aan elkaar knopen doordat hun werk, volgens hun, door een wolf gehinderd wordt. Terwijl Joseph eropuit trekt om het roofdier op te sporen, worstelen Anne en Renée met zijn langdurige afwezigheid. Op een dag vindt Anne de gewonde Lou die voor dood achtergelaten werd.
