Vanuit het niets wordt New York City het doelwit van een buitenaardse invasie. De monsterlijke wezens vallen iedereen aan die ze tegenkomen. Maar de aliens kunnen blijkbaar niets zien, maar lijken zich uitsluitend te oriënteren op basis van geluiden in hun omgeving. Iedereen die ook maar een geluid maakt in de buurt van de buitenaardse wezens heeft praktisch zijn doodvonnis getekend. In het midden van dit alles bevindt zich een jonge vrouw genaamd Sam, die alles moet doen wat ze kan om te overleven terwijl de stad om haar heen in chaos en vernietiging vervalt.
