Artie Crawford is een veteraan uit de Tweede Wereldoorlog die in een verzorgingstehuis in Noord-Ierland woont en net zijn vrouw heeft verloren. Op de 75e verjaardag van de landing op D-Day in Normandië besluit Artie in het geheim zijn verzorgingstehuis te ontvluchten. Hij begint aan een zware maar inspirerende reis naar Frankrijk om zijn beste vriend de laatste eer te bewijzen en de moed te vinden om de geesten van zijn verleden onder ogen te zien.
