De negenjarige Buddy is gek op films en groeit op in de late jaren 60 in Belfast. Het is een turbulente periode voor het gezin uit de arbeidersklasse. Buddy wordt getuige van een land waarin grote chaos heerst. Intussen worstelen zijn ouders met de idee om Noord-Ierland te verlaten en een nieuw leven te beginnen.
