Susie Salmon (Saoirse Ronan), is een meisje van veertien dat verkracht en vermoord wordt door haar buurman. In de tussenwereld ziet ze hoe haar familie om gaat met het tragische verlies. Terwijl haar vader ronddoolt om de vermeende moordenaar van zijn dochter op te sporen, glijdt Susie’s moeder langzaam weg van haar gezin. Toch blijkt gaandeweg dat er in Susie's afwezigheid ook een nieuwe kracht schuilt, die de breekbare familiebanden opnieuw met elkaar verbindt. Daarnaast volgt Susie ook de moordenaar, die alle bewijzen probeert te verbergen en op het punt staat opnieuw toe te slaan...
