Massimo Sisti is de eigenaar van een tandartspraktijk die zijn naam draagt. Professioneel, beleefd en kalm heeft hij alles bereikt wat hij zich kan wensen: een villa in een rustige omgeving en een gezin waar hij van houdt en dat hem gezelschap houdt terwijl de dagen, maanden en jaren voorbijgaan. Zijn vrouw Alessandra en zijn dochters Laura en Ilenia (de eerste al een tiener, de tweede nog niet) zijn z'n reden van bestaan, zijn geluk en de beloning voor een leven dat geworteld is in zelfopoffering en eerlijkheid. Dan breekt het onvoorziene door in deze onverstoorbare en kalme lente: op een dag als alle andere daalt Massimo af naar de kelder en het absurde neemt bezit van zijn leven.
