Parijs, 1899: De jonge schrijver Christian reist af naar Montmartre en raakt bevriend met enkele Boheemse artiesten, die een levensstijl van vrijheid, waarheid, schoonheid en liefde naleven. De artiesten proberen een show te verkopen aan de Moulin Rouge, wiens eigenaar een goede show nodig heeft om van de nachtclub een echt theater te kunnen maken.
