1988. De inwoners van het kleine stadje Melo raken behoorlijk opgewonden als ze horen dat Johannes Paulus II zijn bezoek aan Uruguay bij hen zal beginnen. Volgens de media worden er meer dan 50 000 mensen verwacht en dat betekent 50 000 pelgrims die eten en drank nodig zullen hebben, papieren vlaggetjes, souvenirs en herdenkingsmedailles. De arme inwoners van het stadje lopen over van enthousiasme; ze hopen niet alleen op hemelse zegeningen, maar vooral op een deel van de materiële opbrengsten. Beto, een kleine smokkelaar die zijn inkomen bij elkaar schraapt door fietstochtjes naar de grens met Brazilië te organiseren, heeft een lumineus idee: hij zal een toilet bouwen voor zijn huis en het verhuren aan de pelgrims.
