CIA agent Bryan Mills gaat met zijn gezin op vakantie in Istanbul. Eenmaal daar is de vader van een van de kidnappers, die Bryan vermoord heeft toen hij zijn dochter Kim probeerde te redden, uit op wraak. Hij neemt Bryan en zijn vrouw in gijzeling. In een poging om gered te worden doet Bryan een beroep op Kim.
