Het verhaal speelt zich af in 1964 en een driedaagse reis langs Route 66 begint wanneer Bobby Falls, een 19-jarige seriemoordenaar, meelift met Jim Goodwin, een beroemde dierenverzorger die reist met zijn kostbare vracht: zijn tv-chimpansee, Spanky.
