Deze film is gebaseerd op een waargebeurd verhaal van Dokter Drauzio Varella die werkte in de Carandiru gevangenis in São Paulo, Brazilië. Toen Dokter Drauzio op bezoek kwam in de gevangenis om mee te helpen AIDS te voorkomen in de gevangenis, vond hij honderden gevangenen in erbarmelijke omstandigheden. Als de gevangenen in opstand komen loopt het erg uit de hand.
Nee, helaas is Carandiru nog niet beschikbaar op Netflix in Nederland.
