Het getrouwde stel Elliot (Mark Wahlberg) en Alma (Zooey Deschanel) moet samen met een groep vreemden vluchten voor een apocalyptische crisis die de wereld dreigt op te slokken. Deze vreselijke gebeurtenis zorgt ervoor dat mensen helemaal doordraaien en zichzelf doden. Veel mensen denken dat het een virus, of zelfs een terroristische aanslag is, maar niemand kan het met zekerheid zeggen. Tot een ietwat excentrieke bioloog met een mogelijke uitleg komt.
