De 14-jarige Leo Beiderman ontdekt bij stom toeval een nieuwe komeet. De ambitieuze journaliste Jenny Lerner krijgt er lucht van en ziet de primeur als een handig carrièrezetje, want, zo maakt de eerste zwarte president Tom Beck bekend: de mensheid heeft nog maar een paar maanden te gaan. Als noodoplossing wordt een gigantische onderaardse schuilkelder aangelegd waar één miljoen uitverkorenen de jarenlange winter die de komeetinslag zal veroorzaken, kunnen overleven.
