De film vertelt het waargebeurde verhaal van de eerste Russische nucleaire onderzeeër, die met pech kreeg te kampen op zijn eerste reis naar de Noord-Atlantische zee in 1961. De crew, geleid door de stugge kapitein Zateyev, raakt betrokken in een race tegen de klok om een ontploffing te voorkomen die niet alleen de crew zou doden, maar ook een wereldoorlog tot gevolg zou kunnen hebben.
