De wetenschapper J. Robert Oppenheimer leidt het zeer geheime Manhattanproject. Onder meer de Hongaarse wetenschapper Edward Teller, die de waterstofbom uitvindt, werkt eraan mee. Oppenheimer is getrouwd met Katherine, maar heeft een affaire met Jean Tatlock, een lid van de Communistische Partij. De overheid acht haar gevaarlijk voor de belangen van de Amerikaanse veiligheid. Oppenheimer is uiteindelijk verantwoordelijk voor de uitvinding van de atoombom.
Nee, helaas is Oppenheimer nog niet beschikbaar op Netflix in Nederland.
