Scott Voss is een apathische 42-jarige biologieleraar op een slecht presterende high school, die tijdens zijn college-jaren worstelde. Vanwege noodzakelijke bezuinigingen dreigt het vak muziek te sneuvelen en de muziekleraar zijn baan kwijt te raken. Scott begint geld in te zamelen door als martial arts vechter deel te nemen aan vechtwedstrijden. Iedereen denkt dat Scott gek is – vooral de schoolarts Bella – maar hij wordt een sensatie die de hele school op zijn kop zet.
