Helen heeft haar leven altijd zo ver mogelijk van de rand geleefd. Nu ze onlangs gescheiden en een beetje verloren is, besluit Helen dat ze een nieuwe start nodig heeft en schrijft zich in voor een overlevingscursus in de wildernis. Het avontuur is een tocht door de Appalachian Trail met een groep vreemdelingen. Vanaf het begin wordt Helens plan om de beste wandelaar te zijn op de proef gesteld en vindt ze meer dan alleen zichzelf in de wildernis.
