Jim Jarmusch is begonnen aan 'Coffee and Cigarettes' in 1986 als een 6 minuten durende improvisatie tussen Steven Wright en Roberto Benigni. Twee mensen ontmoeten elkaar in een koffiebar om te drinken, roken en babbelen. Enkele jaren later maakte Jarmusch een andere versie, bekend onder de naam 'Memphis version', waarin Steve Buscemi een ober is en Joie Lee en Cinqué Lee de klanten zijn die koffie drinken en sigaretten roken. Door de jaren heen is Jarmusch door gegaan met dit soort opnames maken en dat is intussen bij elkaar deze film geworden.
Nee, helaas is Coffee and Cigarettes nog niet beschikbaar op Netflix in Nederland.
