Alan Parrish ontdekt Jumanji, een mysterieus en reuzespannend spel. Wanneer Alan het samen met zijn vriendinnetje Sarah gaat spelen, ontdekt hij, te laat, dat het spel bovennatuurlijke krachten heeft. Door een ongelukkige worp van de dobbelstenen wordt hij de jungle van Jumanji ingezogen. Daar blijft hij 26 jaar lang opgesloten tot hij door twee nietsvermoedende kinderen wordt bevrijd. Samen met Judy en Peter moeten de inmiddels volwassen geworden Alan en Sarah het spel uitspelen.
